RUNAWAYS Crime & Police Mechanics
Charges, chases & search areasThe police system is the pressure valve of RUNAWAYS: every crime raises the stakes, every chase can end your run. This page tracks the crime and law-enforcement mechanics confirmed in gameplay, and flags the community claims that are not verified yet.
Charges (crime detection)
Committing crimes earns you charges — the game tracks them and the police respond.
- A hit-and-run after a car crash triggers the text "We've been charged with hit-and-run". [Fact: gameplay footage, AccelToWin 2026-08-16]
- Blowing up vehicles during a chase triggers "Charged with bombing". [Fact: gameplay footage, 2026-08-16]
- Getting caught adds to your record — the footage session racks up hit-and-run, bombing and shooting charges before being taken down. [Fact: gameplay footage, 2026-08-16]
Police response
Chases
- Crimes (including reports from witnesses) start police chases: in the footage, mugging people and stealing laptops brings police sirens and a pursuit. [Fact: gameplay footage, 2026-08-16]
- Police shoot to stop you — the session ends with the player getting shot and passing out. [Fact: gameplay footage, 2026-08-16]
- Your car has health during chases ("our car health is 77" after contact) — damage accumulates into a destroyed car. [Fact: gameplay footage, 2026-08-16]
Search areas
- When you lose the immediate chase, police set up a search area; leaving it warns "You left the search area" and keeps the pressure on. [Fact: gameplay footage, 2026-08-16]
- Escaping a search area is a core skill — see the Escape Police guide.
Crimes you can commit
Confirmed by official text or footage:
- Burglary / theft — the first mission asks you to steal five items; houses contain lootable objects like laptops. [Fact: gameplay footage, 2026-08-16]
- Mugging — NPCs (and players) can be robbed. [Fact: gameplay footage, 2026-08-16]
- Trespassing — entering houses through their entrance triggers the crime system. [Fact: gameplay footage — entering a house immediately drew attention]
- Hit and run and bombing — confirmed via charge messages above. [Fact: gameplay footage, 2026-08-16]
The RUNAWAYS Fandom wiki additionally lists grand theft, murder, shoplifting and a distinction between residential and commercial trespassing (residential doors count as trespassing, commercial doors do not, and staff-only areas are restricted). [Unverified — community wiki claims, not yet confirmed in gameplay]
What is still unknown
- The exact wanted-level / heat formula and how it scales with crime severity — unverified
- Whether trespassing rules differ by building type (residential vs commercial) — unverified
- What murder, grand theft and shoplifting look like in practice — unverified
- How charges affect run rewards or the escape attempt — unverified
Practical takeaway
Crimes are the economy and the threat at the same time. Steal loud, and you fund the run; stay loud too long, and the chase math turns against you. Use the Rob & Pawn loop for quiet cash and save the loud moments for vaults — see Crack Vaults.
