How to Escape Police in RUNAWAYS
Police pressure is the tax on success in RUNAWAYS. The more you rob and the louder you vault, the harder the city pushes back. Escaping is a skill you practice on purpose — not a panic button you discover mid-failure.
Mindset
You do not need to wipe every officer. You need distance, cover and a lighter bag. Fighting is optional; disappearing is mandatory for border dreams.
Control toolkit for chases
- C crouch/slide — break aim and peek corners.
- X drop — dump noisy or heavy items that slow you.
- F inventory — confirm you are not over-encumbered mid-sprint.
- E equip — swap to mobility-friendly tools.
- R reload — only behind hard cover.
- Q attach — never open this menu mid-chase.
- Click/Touch — last-resort melee if cornered.
Chase phases
1. Spike
Sirens just triggered. Leave the crime scene immediately. Do not finish “one more shelf.” The spike phase is won by decisive exits, not greed.
2. Pressure
Officers or pursuit logic stick to you. Prioritize line-of-sight breaks: corners, interiors, elevation changes and slides that desync predictable sprint lines. Drop bulk the moment mobility feels wrong.
3. Reset
You bought space. Do not instantly re-aggro with a pointless gunfight. Open F, tidy the bag, re-equip the tool you need, and decide: pawn, hide, or convert to a border attempt.
4. Re-engage trap
This is where players die after “escaping”: they celebrate, stand still, reload in the open, or walk back into the same vault doorway. Keep moving until heat truly dies.
Drop discipline under fire
- Drop low-tier junk first.
- Drop mid-tier if slides still feel heavy.
- Protect compact high-value items unless death is certain.
- Drop a gun only if the gun itself is why heat will not decay and you have another plan.
When shooting helps
Shoot when an officer or player hard-blocks the only exit and you already planned cover for the reload. Do not spray in open streets as a coping mechanism. Noise is currency.
Linking escapes to the rest of the loop
- After a street robbery chase: return to Rob & Pawn with shorter loops.
- After a vault chase: admit the boom tax and re-check Crack Vaults prep gaps.
- Before a border convert: force the readiness checklist from Reach the Border.
Practice drills
- Slide corridor: pick two alleys and slide every corner for one minute.
- Panic drop: fill the bag with junk on purpose, trigger a short chase mindset, and drop down to mobility.
- Cover reload: find hard cover, empty a mag conceptually, reload, leave — never doorway reloads.
- Reset walk: after a fake escape, keep moving for twenty seconds before looting again.
Escaping police is the skill that makes every other RUNAWAYS guide honest. Without it, robbery is sightseeing and vaults are fireworks shows you do not survive.
