RUNAWAYS Map and Locations Guide

RUNAWAYS drops you into an open-world crime fantasy with a US-to-Mexico escape route: the official badges confirm the order — Kansas Checkpoint → Oklahoma Checkpoint — and gameplay footage shows the final destination is the Mexican border, roughly 16+ miles from the starting area. This guide teaches how to read the city without relying on landmark names that go stale mid-beta.

How to think about the map

Treat the experience as four overlapping layers:

  1. Loot layer — streets and interiors where robbery is worth the heat.
  2. Economy layer — pawn conversion points and the paths that feed them.
  3. Spike layer — vault neighborhoods that pay loud and attract attention.
  4. Exit layer — approaches toward the border where inventory discipline matters most.

Move between layers on purpose. Most wipes happen when players stay on the spike layer with a junk bag and no exit plan.

Street circuits

Early lives should feel like short circuits, not sightseeing tours. Pick a quiet block cluster, clear a tight bundle of loot, then convert.

  • Prefer compact value over bulk trophies.
  • Revisit the same two or three blocks until your thumbs know the corners.
  • Leave when contested players turn your circuit into a brawl arena.
  • Use C to cut sightlines between alleys instead of sprinting down the same main road twice.

Pawn-adjacent routes

Pawn timing is a location skill. Carrying a glowing bag across three contested avenues is how you donate loot to strangers and police. Plan pawn approaches like vault exits: short, boring, interruptible.

Checklist before a pawn push: drop clutter with X, confirm F inventory is organized enough to sell without freezing, pre-equip what you need with E, and know one slide line if sirens stack.

Vault neighborhoods as risk zones

Vaults are not tourist attractions. Treat vault areas as temporary warzones: enter with a breaker role, free bag space and a planned disengage.

  • Approach from a side you can abandon.
  • Do not stage your entire net worth on the doorstep.
  • Reload behind cover, never in the doorway silhouette.
  • If the neighborhood is already loud with other crews, postpone — contested vaults are tax events.

Police pressure geography

Police are a map layer, not a random cutscene. Heat follows loud crimes and long chases. Favor broken sightlines (alleys, corners, elevation changes you can slide through), short pawn detours, and abort routes that dump you toward quieter blocks. Avoid long straight avenues while over-encumbered and re-opening the same vault street after a failed boom.

Fuel and vehicles

Cars are a core part of the map economy: you buy a car (permanent ownership), fill it with gas at gas stations (~$15 per unit in beta), and watch both fuel and car health during chases. Owning a pass vehicle changes how you route — see the Gamepasses pages for stats like speed, handling and armor.

Border approach

The border is the fantasy win condition. Use the readiness gates from Reach the Border: cash and tools match an escape loadout, inventory is trimmed, heat is manageable, and the crew agrees on abort signals. When those gates pass, the map becomes an approach problem: fewer stops, fewer ego fights, more commitment.

Beta honesty about landmarks

Community nicknames for corners will appear and vanish. Prefer system language: loot circuit, pawn approach, vault risk zone, escape corridor, border approach. When updates change routes, re-test your circuits instead of arguing about old slang.
